Drowning in the Wrong Applicants?

Here is a paradox most hiring managers will recognise instantly. There is no shortage of applicants right now, only a shortage of the right ones.

A recent article put some numbers behind the frustration. A 2025 survey found that 41 per cent of recruiting leaders now name a lack of qualified candidates as their biggest hiring bottleneck. The article points to a few clear causes. Application tools powered by artificial intelligence let candidates send off dozens of applications with barely any effort. Easy Apply buttons have made applying so frictionless that many people click before checking whether they are even close to a fit. Vague or overly broad job descriptions make things worse still. If candidates cannot tell whether they are qualified, plenty will apply anyway, just in case.
Ask a Manager covered similar ground recently, after a reader was inundated with applications for a fairly specialised role, most of which showed no sign the applicant had read the job description at all. The consensus among commenters was that a lot of jobseekers are now taking a scattergun approach, applying everywhere regardless of fit. Interestingly, several pointed out that this is not always laziness. In some places, benefits systems require proof of a minimum number of weekly applications, which pushes people towards volume whether they want the job or not.
Why does this matter? Because when strong candidates get buried under a wall of poor fit applications, they get missed. Hiring managers burn out on screening, timelines stretch, and everyone loses out.
For candidates: Five honest pointers
Read the job description properly before you apply. It sounds obvious, but clearly this is not happening enough. A couple of minutes checking the essential requirements against your own experience saves everyone time, including yours.
Do not let Easy Apply do your thinking for you. It is a good tool for finding roles, not for deciding whether to apply. A short, tailored application will beat a generic one nearly every time, simply because so few people bother to write one.
If your experience is not an obvious match, explain why it still works. Do not assume the employer will join the dots. Spell out the transferable element yourself, and do it clearly.
If you are applying to hit a quota, keep those applications separate. Ring fence them from the applications you genuinely care about, so your strongest efforts do not get lost in the noise.
Go narrow rather than wide. Sector specific job boards, direct applications and your professional network will usually outperform mass applying through general job sites, because you are competing in a much smaller and more relevant pool.
For employers, the fix runs the other way
Sharper job descriptions with a clear split between essential and desirable criteria, better screening questions, and smarter use of niche job boards will do far more good than relying on volume to sort itself out. This is precisely where good recruitment partners earn their keep.
At Accomplish Today, this is the problem we solve every single day.
